Mikel scores against PSG

It feels great to be back in the team; sometimes it is disappointing not to be part of the team, not to play but I’ve always been professional,” the  Super Eagles midfielder told Chelsea TV.

I never speak out, I never get upset, I carry on doing my job, coming to training every day to train with the guys who are playing.

This is football. In one second it changes. I’ve always believed in myself and kept doing what I was doing and Guus came in and has given me the opportunity, and hopefully that will continue.

It is my 10th season at the club since 2006. Maybe I’ll get a testimonial soon.”

Martins took to Twitter to confirm his transfer to Shenhua on Wednesday, ending his three-year association with the Sounders in MLS.

The 31-year-old, who scored 40 goals and amassed 23 assists in 80 league and play-off appearances in MLS, will link up with former Inter midfielder Fredy Guarin and ex-Chelsea striker Demba Ba at Shenhua after Australia international Tim Cahill made way for Martins.

"Thank you Seattle. Thank you for everything. Thank you for the memories that will last a lifetime. Thank you for the endless support, during the good times and bad. Thank you to my team-mates and coaches for always believing in me," Martins wrote.

"Something I feel strongly about is challenging myself. When I came to Seattle, it was for the challenge. The challenge of playing in an unknown environment. I can wholeheartedly say that I seized the opportunity in Seattle and gave everything I had for the club.

"For me it's now time for a new challenge. After significant reflection, I have decided to join Shanghai Greenland Shenhua FC of the CSL. When I left Nigeria for Italy at the age of 15 with the hopes of a pro career, I put everything on the line.

I was immersed in an unknown culture. It may be difficult to understand or relate to, but I've grown to appreciate the feeling I get when entering environments where I'm not a proven footballer.
"Seattle will always have a special place in my heart."

Martins follows in the footsteps of Alex Teixeira (Jiangsu Suning), Jackson Martinez (Guangzhou Evergrande Taobao), Ramires (Jiangsu Suning), Ezequiel Lavezzi (Hebei China Fortune) and Gervinho (Hebei China Fortune), who now call China home.

Health Tips: 5 foods that boost brain function

What we eat can have serious impact on how our brain works. That being said, it is vital to seek out foods that help improve brain function and in turn make you healthier mentally.

According to a list put together by nutritionist, Naomi Mead, here are 5 foods that can improve brain function:
  • Eggs: Egg yolks possess a B vitamin which aids memory and brain function. Choline, which can be found in eggs aids synthesis of acetylcholine, a messenger in the brain that relays communication between the brain and the nerves and muscles. During pregnancy, choline deficiency has been linked with neural tube defects.

  • Salmon fish: Salmon possesses omega-3 fatty acids, which enhance learning and memory. They are also vital for healthy arteries and strong circulation, as well as maintaining a healthy blood supply to the brain. Consuming salmon 2/3 times weekly, can decrease the chances of stroke and dementia.

  • Blueberries: This possesses polyphenolic compounds, predominantly anthocyanins, which have strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. A research of older adults with early memory changes discovered that 12 weeks of daily blueberry eating was enough to improve scores on tests of cognitive function, including memory.

  • Dark chocolate: Chocolate is rich in flavonoids, which can help to improve blood vessel function, increasing blood flow to vital areas of the brain for 2-3 hours after eating. This suggests dark chocolate may improve brain function in persons who are intellectually impaired due to fatigue, ageing or lack of sleep.

  • Beef: Opt for organic, grass-fed beef, which provides vitamin B12, and possesses up to 5 times the omega-3 content of grain-fed beef. Vitamin B12 is key for healthy brain, and a lack of this vitamin may result to brain shrinkage. Mental fogginess and poor memory are also signs of vitamin B12 deficiency.
Incorporate these healthy and beneficial foods into your diet and let us know what the results are.

Turkey Car Bomb: Newspaper identifies Ankara car bomb attacker as Syrian national

The bomber, identified as Salih Necar, was thought to have entered Turkey with refugees from Syria.

A Syrian national, identified from his fingerprints, carried out a car bomb attack next to military buses in Turkey's capital, Ankara, that killed 28 people, the pro-government Yeni Safak newspaper said on Thursday.
The paper did not specify the source for its report and it was not immediately possible to confirm it. A claim of responsibility for Wednesday's bombing has not yet been made.
The bomber, identified as Salih Necar, was thought to have entered Turkey with refugees from Syria. His fingerprints had been taken when he entered the country, which was how police identified him, Yeni Safak reported on its website.
It said the car used in the attack, carried out near Turkey's military headquarters, parliament and other government buildings, had been rented out in the western Turkish city of Izmir around two weeks ago.
A senior security source said initial signs indicated that Kurdish militants from the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) were responsible for the attack.

Chelsea midfielder Obi Mikel hoping his goal will be decisive against PSG

Mikel Obi

Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel hopes his goal at PSG will be decisive in their Champions League tie.

An away goal could prove decisive when the teams meet in London on Wednesday 9 March, with the score currently 2-1.

"We're a bit disappointed," said the Nigerian. "They had more possession and we know how good they are but we went out there to play and get a goal, and we did that. Now we have an away goal and hopefully we can capitalise on that at home.

"We want to play and keep doing what we've been doing. It's our first loss under the new manager but we're not out of the tie yet, we've still got the second leg to play and hopefully we can build on the goal we have.

"When we play at home we need to make sure we get a good result and go through."

Guus Hiddink 'envies' PSG strength but insists Chelsea still in Champions League race

Chelsea players look dejected following their 2-1 defeat in Paris
Guus Hiddink insists Chelsea are "still in the race" to reach the next stage of the Champions League, despite a first leg defeat to PSG.

Edinson Cavani's late strike on Tuesday night sealed a 2-1 win for the hosts in the last-16 encounter but Jon Obi Mikel cancelled out Zlatan Ibrahimovic's opener to give Chelsea a vital away goal.

"Of course, a defeat is never a good or nice feeling, but you have to consider that it is a two-legged game, and scoring away is always good," Hiddink said.

"We emphasise on that, and emphasise a very good tactical defensive organisation, but on top of that we had some danger also. We were not killing in the four or five counters that we had, I think we could have gone a little bit further than that. But losing 2-1, of course we are still in the race.

Cavani, a £55m record signing for the runaway Ligie 1 leaders, had started the game on the bench and Hiddink admitted he looked on with envy at the options at Laurent Blanc's disposal.

"I think bearing in mind we are playing a very strong team, you can see that this team what they can bring in the second half with substitutions, this is a very strong PSG with a good build in the total squad," Hiddink said.

"I envy a bit the bench of PSG.
Edinson Cavani celebrates having scored the winner for PSG

"The performance of our players tactically was good, but we could have been a little better in the four or five counters we made. I'm never happy with a loss, but it's not a dramatic loss.

"The players did well (defensively), not just the four in defence. We also had a disciplined midfield, we had to reshuffle."

Eden Hazard started for the second match in a row - only his third start in six games after completing his first 90 minutes of 2016 against Newcastle on Saturday - before he was brought off for Oscar at the Parc des Princes.

And Hiddink said the Belgian, who chose the eve of the match to reveal it would be difficult to turn down a move to PSG, has some "growing" to do to return to his best.

Chelsea manager Guus Hiddink says Eden Hazard's fitness need to 'grow'

Hiddink said: "He had a threat forward and he had some good runs, but of course, this was a game with a high intensity. After 65, 70 minutes, it was enough for him.

"He has to grow and when he does, his shape will grow as well. Happily we also have Oscar for his position. He will be better and better."

John Terry missed the trip to Paris and may have to wait for his 700th Chelsea appearance as he is a doubt for Sunday's FA Cup fifth-round tie at home to Manchester City.

Hiddink will not rush the captain back.

"We'll see," he said. "We must be careful. We must not go into a situation where he will drop back into a longer period of injury."

Man jailed for stealing ‘soft drinks’

A Gudu Upper Area Court in the FCT on Wednesday sentenced, Nebo Achebe, to three weeks imprisonment for stealing 13 cans of beverage and electric bulbs.

The presiding officer, Alhaji Umar Kagarko, also gave the convict an option to a fine of N3,000. Kagarko warned the convict to desist from committing crime after his sentence. He also ordered that the recovered items should be returned to the owners within 30 days from Feb. 17.

Achebe, a resident of No.9 Okey Water Street, Federal Housing, Lugbe, Abuja, was convicted for theft. Earlier, the Prosecutor, Adeniyi Oyeyemi, had told the court that Pius Peter of Plot 270, Muhammadu Buhari way, Central Area, Abuja, reported the matter at the Central Police Station on Feb. 15.

Oyeyemi said the convict was caught with 10 cans of Hi-malt, three cans of Fayrouz and three pieces of electrical bulbs all valued at N3,690 at Grand Square Supermarket, Central Area, Abuja, on the said date. Oyeyemi said the offence contravened Section 287 of the Penal Code. Achebe, however, pleaded guilty and begged for leniency.

BIAFRA: We won’t resort to violence in self-defence —IPOB

Nnewi—The Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, has denied earlier reports that it has resolved to resort to violence with the security agencies who have been killing their members during protest and prayer sessions. In a statement issued yesterday in Nnewi by the IPOB Media and Publicity Officer, Mr. Emma Powerful, he said there was never a time IPOB threatened to resort to violence in its agitation for the release of its leader and Director of Radio Biafra, Mr.

Nnamdi Kanu and actualization of the sovereign state of Biafra. He said those who were quoting IPOB or any of its coordinators or spokespersons as saying so, were either trying to be mischievous or trying to paint a picture of IPOB being a violent group that will be tagged a terrorist group by the international community .

According to him, IPOB after the killing of their members in a prayer session in Aba, Abia State by security men and several other killings that resulted to the loss of lives of over 1,000 members, resolved to defend themselves in the face of any attack, but it did not say with weapons.

His words: “We believe that some people are out to destroy IPOB name, and it is the same people who tried without success to link us with the seizure of a merchant ship last month, which the Nigerian Army confirmed the hijackers were not from Nigeria. Now, that the plan to tarnish our image has failed, they are plotting another way by saying that we want to go violent, but their plan will not work.

“IPOB will maintain its non violent approach. Like other responsible Biafra agitators, we will not be violent but Nigerians and the world should be rest assured that we will defend ourselves in the face of any attack by the military, police or any other security agencies because we have been pushed to the wall by the Nigerian military and the police, and we will not take that any longer.

“There are many non violent ways of defending ourselves. Self defence is approved in international law, and you should not be shooting people that were praying and think that they will leave you unchallenged. “We are not going to involve in any kind of arms struggle. It is not our style but we must achieve Biafra.

It is funny that the people that have been killing us over the years are now jittery that we said we will defend ourselves in the face of any attack. So, they love their lives, they do not want to die but they are killing us. Let them try and kill our members again and we will show them how we will defend ourselves” he said.

Dasuki: Am not ready for trial

ABUJA— Former National Security Adviser, NSA, Sambo Dasuki, has said he was not ready for trial until the Federal Government complied with an order of the Federal High Court granting him bail.

In November 2015, Justice Adeniyi Ademola had granted Dasuki bail but the Department of State Services, DSS, rearrested him immediately after his release from Kuje prison. Counsel to the DSS, Dipo Okpeseyi (SAN), announced to the court, yesterday, that the prosecution was ready for trial to commence.

But Joseph Daudu, counsel to Dasuki, said the defence counsel was not ready to proceed with the trial because the Federal Government was still keeping the accused person in detention, despite an order of the court granting him bail. He said: “We cannot be ready for trial until the defendant enjoys his constitutional rights.

We apply that we should be given time to prepare the defence. The conduct of the prosecution has not enabled him to enjoy his constitutional rights. The worst thing is that for about seven weeks we have had no idea of his whereabouts.”

However, Okpeseyi argued that the prosecution was not stopping Dasuki from enjoying his freedom, saying the accused person was not allegedly held for the charges before the court. He, therefore, asked the court to reject the request for adjournment and to commence trial. But the court adjourned till March 3 for the hearing on a motion to discharge Dasuki.

Confusion in PDP as Ali Modu Sheriff emerge as PDP National Chairman

ABUJA- CRISIS rocking the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP Tuesday took a new twist as there was a sharp division among the organs of the party over the choice of former governor of Borno State, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff as the new national chairman of the Party.

Senator Modu Sheriff was picked by National Caucus of PDP comprising the governors, members of the National Working committee, NWC and the leadership of the National Assembly.

Sheriff who was the Chairman, Board of Trustees, BoT of the defunct All Nigeria Peoples Party, ANPP, was picked by the caucus as the candidate from the pool of other aspirants that appeared for the interview and screening.

Twenty nine names were said to have indicated interest for the position, but later pruned down to seven, even as former Chairman, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu who indicated interest for the position, but did not show up for the screening.

Sheriff was the choice of the governors, the Senators, the national caucus, the National Working Committee, NWC, just as his name was waiting for approval by BoT and ratification by the National Executive Committee, NEC.

Blanc prepares Paris for Chelsea challenge

Laurent Blanc acknowledged Paris Saint-Germain's "entire season will be judged on our Champions League campaign" as they prepare to play Chelsea for the third year running.

We'll need to impose our game on Chelsea, a team who are capable of beating us. We met Chelsea in the past two seasons: they beat us once and we eliminated them once, which shows that the level of the two teams is very similar. The Champions League gives them an opportunity for positive things in an otherwise difficult season, and their manager is very experienced having won the competition already.

Hiddink focusing on Chelsea present

Terry's absence could be very important for Chelsea, as he's an important player both on the pitch and in terms of team spirit; he's also very important on set pieces. We saw that on Saturday – when he went off, it completely changed the defensive line.

I still have two uncertainties regarding my lineup: between Marquinhos and [Gregory] Van der Wiel for right-back, and also another one. I almost have a full squad available – apart from a player who ruled himself out [Serge Aurier]. I know that Marco [Verratti, groin] is not fit enough for 90 minutes but I want to use him. Now I have to chose whether he will start or finish the game. Apart from that, the squad is very focused on the match.

We all know our entire season will be judged on our Champions League campaign – for most media, not winning the league is not an option, and it would also look bad not to win both domestic cups. The Champions League is something else, because we only face clubs that have the same level or higher than us.

We have the capacity to do well in this competition, more so that in previous years, notably thanks to our experienced players. Starting now, we'll only face teams that have the quality to win it. But that's when things become the most interesting for the club, for the players and for the manager. We have the potential to win this competition.

Guus Hiddink, Chelsea manager
I agree it's 50-50 [for the tie]. Paris are building a very strong team, dominating the French league. To become a great club, a team must win the Champions League, and they're certainly aiming for it. On our side, we've been improving since December, but it'll be a great test to get to the next round.

We're growing. Everyone knows the current situation of Chelsea. We're improving step by step, with quality players. We are not yet where we want to be, to be able to impose our style of play, but we've had a string of games with dominant play from us.

Hiddink just focusing on the present

Marco Verratti, although still young, is a key player for Paris and Italy. But PSG have very good replacements if he doesn't start – like we do with John Terry. Big clubs always have big replacements.

Possible lineups
Paris: Trapp; Marquinhos (Van der Wiel), Thiago Silva, David Luiz, Maxwell; Matuidi, Thiago Motta, Verratti (Rabiot); Di María, Ibrahimović, Cavani.
Out: Aurier (disciplinary), Lavezzi (unspecified)
Doubtful: Pastore (hamstring)
Misses next match if booked: Aurier, Verratti

Chelsea: Courtois; Azpilicueta, Ivanović, Cahill, Rahman; Fàbregas, Mikel; Hazard, Willian, Pedro; Costa.
Out: Zouma (knee), Terry (hamstring, ligament), Matić (suspended)
Doubtful: Oscar (calf)
Misses next match if booked: none

UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE: Roma out to upset Real

The prospect of spoiling Zinedine Zidane’s Champions League coaching debut with Real Madrid may be formidable, but Roma midfielder Seydou Keita believes his side can upset the 10-time record champions in their last 16, first leg clash.

“How we line up against them is down to the coach, but for me, we have to believe in ourselves and go on the pitch convinced,” said the Malian ahead of Wednesday’s tie in Rome’s Stadio Olimpico. Former Barcelona midfielder Keita knows his opponents well having won 11 matches with the Catalans in the 17 times he played against the arch Liga rivals. “This game will be difficult, but not impossible,” added Keita of Real’s miserable record against Italian teams in the competition.

Roma coach Luciano Spalletti, brought back to the club recently following the sacking of Frenchman Rudi Garcia, was at the helm when the Italians prevailed over two legs in 2008. Roma beat Real 2-1 at home, a score they would repeat at the Santiago Bernabeu before being humbled 3-0 by eventual winners Manchester United in the quarter-finals.

Real have made it to the semi-finals of the competition the past five seasons, claiming their historic 10th title, ‘La Decima’, in 2014 when current manager Zidane was assistant to Carlo Ancelotti. Efforts to go one step further last year were rebuffed when Juventus claimed a 2-1 win in Turin and booked their final place against Barcelona thanks to a 1-1 draw at the Bernabeu.

But there is little chance Zidane is entertaining another early exit and the former France and Juventus great comes to Rome with only one defeat from his six-game tenure so far, during which Real have scored 23 goals. Despite it being his Champions League debut as coach, Zidane’s past experience in the competition gives him the knowledge of what it takes to succeed in Europe’s premier club competition.

“When you’re a player, you dream of playing in the World Cup, but you can dream of the Champions League every year,” said Zidane. “We are prepared and we want to do something important in this competition.” Although Welsh winger Gareth Bale remains sidelined with a calf strain, Real welcomed left-back Marcelo, who missed a 4-2 win over Athletic Bilbao at the weekend due to a a dislocated shoulder, back to their matchday squad.

With central defender Pepe sidelined, Raphael Varane will keep his place alongside Sergio Ramos despite being sent off in a poor display at the weekend when Cristiano Ronaldo hit a brace and James Rodriguez and Toni Kroos added their names to the scoresheet. Karim Benzema, who set up Ronaldo for his first on Saturday, admits it won’t be all plain sailing. “The key to the tie is us. If we are on top form we will win,” said the French striker.

“We have to take into account the speed of their forwards, but we are Real Madrid, for me the best team in the world, and we have the best defenders in the world.” Roma, it seems, have been warned. Despite Keita’s call for confidence, fans will be hoping Roma at least produce the kind of display that held Barcelona to a 1-1 draw in the group stages earlier this season, and not one that led to a 7-1 humiliation at the hands of Bayern Munich in Rome last year. On the plus side, Roma claimed a fourth consecutive league win last weekend for the first time since October.

Argentinian midfielder Diego Perotti admits, Bayern, Barcelona and Real are “all favourites for the title”. But it seems Keita’s words are already rubbing off: “They’re not going to find it easy against us. We’ll be giving it our all, and we have possibilities to cause an upset in this tie.”

Chibok girls: We didn’t say we have identified specific location – NAF

Nigerian Air Force has said its attention has been drawn to reports that the NAF has located the position of the Chibok Dismiss girls. It said the report was not exactly true as what it said was a possible location and not the specific location as reported in the media.

NAF Spokesman, Group Captain Ayodele Famuyiwa, in a statement Saturday night said the report was a misrepresentation of the interview he granted the Channels Television that was aired on Friday 12 February, 2016.

“The NAF is hereby making it categorically clear that in the said interview, the Director made mention of the NAF’s ability to identify POSSIBLE LOCATION that the girls might be in,” it said.
The statement stated that it had at no time identified the specific location of the Chibok girls.
Continuing, it said, “However, it is working round the clock with surveillance aircraft covering the over 157,000 km2 area of the North East in order to identify the position of not only the Chibok girls but other Nigerians that might have been held captives.

“Towards the realization of this goal, the NAF has from January 2016 till date using aircraft, ISR platforms such as ATR-42, B-350 and CH-3 UAV flown surveillance missions totaling over 346 hours consuming about 85,887 litres of Jet A-1 and 3,830 litres of Mogas costing N15,337,862:50 and $19,150:00 respectively.

“Therefore, whilst the specific position of the Chibok girls is not yet ascertained by the NAF, we have not folded our arms on the surveillance flights and will continue to use these flights to degrade the capacity of the terrorists and as soon as possible locate the position of the Chibok girls and other Nigerians that are under captivity.”

Cossy buys self a car as Val gift

Nollywood diva, Cossy Orjiakor has never hidden her love for pink colour.
Most of her priced possessions are pink in colour. From her house, to her shoes, to dresses and even her panties, Cossy certainly has a thing for the pink colour.

When casmirobiegbolublog  asked her if she had had any unforgettable St. Valentine’s day experience, the hugely busty actress replied : “ I can’t remember but I will be spending my Valentine in my new pinky.”

For someone who has almost all of her things in pink, it was a confusing answer but she was quick to explain with a picture of a pink sport car, “That’s my new pinky because it’s pink”.

When I teased her if it was a Val’s gift from a love-struck lover or should I say a boobs-struck lover, “Hahaha, I just bought it. It’s manual , so by February 14, I will spend it inside my pinky,” she told me.

$2.1bn Arms Deal: Amosu returns N66 million

Amosu

One of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) chiefs implicated in the $2.1 billion arms deal and put under house arrest at Niger Barracks, Abuja has returned N66 million of the N90 million, allegedly traced to him, to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Consequently, the officer, a Principal Staff Officer at NAF Headquarters, was released from detention and asked to go and look for the balance of the money.

An EFCC source, however, said this did not mean he is completely exonerated. We gathered that the other officers being detained by the NAF High Command, on behalf of the EFCC, were not allowed the privileged because they had refused to cooperate fully with the EFCC interrogation team even though some had returned exotic cars and other valuables. It was also gathered that an Air Commodore, said to have benefitted from the arms deal and has properties in Dubai, Kaduna and Abuja, has been arrested and is in detention. One of the detained Air Vice Marshals (AVMs) is said to be the leader of the team that went to buy aircraft with incomplete parts and also inflated the price from $6million to over $30million.

NAF High Command had, on Thursday, stepped up its anti-corruption war with the removal of some officers including Air Officers Commanding and Principal Staff officers fingered in the arms deal and appointed new Air Officers Commanding. Meanwhile, the wife of a former Chief of the Air Staff, Mrs. Lara Amosu, detained overnight by the EFCC, has been freed.

We gathered that the wife was detained following certain accounts related to her husband, being investigated in connection with the $2.1 billion arms cash, allegedly traced to her. Although the exact figure and details of the accounts were not made public, EFCC was said to have interrogated her for hours last week in Lagos. But a source close to the investigation confirmed the woman had been released on bail. “She is not in our custody having been granted administrative bail. She will be asked to report back whenever we need her for further investigation,” the source said.

The source said the money allegedly recovered from the former air chief’s house in Lagos had been kept as exhibit to be used when the trial of suspects in the arms deal begins. The source further alleged that some properties belonging to the former CAS were also held in trust for him by Lara and her children. There were earlier reports that the anti-graft agency had uncovererd N17.5 billion in the accounts of wives of three airforce chiefs.
